'17-24-30 National Hate Crime Awareness Week' (1184819) was founded in April 2009 marking the 10th anniversaries of the London Nail Bomb attacks on Brixton 17th, Brick Lane 24th April & Soho 30th April 1999 - hence the '17-24-30' part of the charity's name. It organised the first 'London Vigil against Hate Crime' after the death of Ian Baynham who was homophobically abused & assaulted in Trafalgar Square - the vigil went viral on social media, shared on Facebook over 29,000 times, inspiring hundreds of solidarity vigils across the UK & abroad. Over 10,000 people attended the first vigil on the 30th October 2009. 17-24-30 hosted 4 vigils and coordinated others across the UK between 2009 & 2012. In 2012 these vigils evolved into National Hate Crime Awareness Week, hence the second part of the charity's name - a national week of action to encourage the authorities, key partners & communities affected by hate crime to work together to tackle hate crime across the UK. The Charity registered with the Charity Commission in August 2019. 17-24-30 NationalHCAW aims to eliminate hate crime by promoting a strategy of H.O.P.E. across the UK. H - Hate Crime Awareness - making sure everyone knows what hate crime is & how to deal with it. O - Operational Responses - improving the way authorities respond to hate crime & making sure our communities are ready to respond as well. P - Preventing hate crime by learning from what has happened before & putting measures in place to prevent it happening again. E - Community Engagement - facilitating community engagement activities to ensure that everyone is involved in the process of tackling hate crime. The charity organises the annual H.O.P.E. Campaign, the April Acts of Remembrance, National Hate Crime Awareness Week in October, three NationalHCAW meetings, hate crime awareness activities, the Rainbow Boroughs Project, volunteering opportunities & facilitates partnership networking. https://www.linktr.ee/nationalhcaw
