Here to help the many working dementia carers struggling to cope, former dementia carers struggling to understand what they went through and colleagues who want to be supportive. This practical approach is not a tick box exercise. benefits will be seen in proportion to engagement at all levels.
More working adults are caring for elderly than children, many for a person with dementia but this is not openly discussed with employer or colleagues due to the stigma and fear.
Working dementia carers could typically spend 100 hours a month caring for a person with dementia in their own home or 40 hours caring for a person in residential care (not normal for other conditions). Workers are leaving employment to care and organisations are losing skills when a few adjustments and some support could make all the difference. They deserve a decent work/carer/life balance in line with the PM's 2020 Dementia Challenge.
Dementia carers have unique issues:
- The person they care for is terminally ill with a progressive disease which may last many years.
- Grieving for the person they have lost before they have died - many unable to grieve after they have died, sfor months or years.
- Unable to discuss their responsibilities or issues due to the stigma and fear surrounding dementia.
- Situations they have to deal with can be sudden, traumatic and totally unpredictable.
- Poorly equipped to understand the disease or what small changes could make a difference.
- Isolated and alone - at significant risk to their own health.
Following a successful two year Dementia Carer Friendly Met Office pilot study (APM Mike Nichols Award for Inspiration 2015 runner up), 4 Dementia Carers now aims to realise the many benefits of this model in other organisations.
