A L Daines and Partners was founded in 1967 by Alf Daines, a Chartered Structural Engineer with experience from the pre-cast concrete industry, and developed quickly in the 1970s as the only Consulting Engineer in Carlisle. A number of large commercial projects in North Cumbria soon established the practice as a leading consultancy in the region.
The 1980’s saw the appointment of partners, Nigel Perry and Chris Carley, whereupon the practice opened a second office in Manchester. The practice has since developed, further embracing digital technology over the decades and is now well established throughout north-west England and south west Scotland.
Ernest Shimmin, a Partner since 2006, Mike Briggs, a Partner since 2012 and Stewart Marshall, an employee since 2011 who joined the partnership in 2022, provide over 70 years of combined industry experience across the consultancy. This experience has brought with it a reputation for practical, efficient and flexible solutions.
The current workload spans all aspects of Civil and Structural Engineering design from residential schemes and refurbishments to multi-million pound commercial and industrial developments, including ancillary infrastructure design. The practice has experience in historic building renovation and undertakes all aspects of design of timber, steel, concrete and masonry elements in new build design. Much of this work takes place whilst working closely with many of the Architectural practices based locally and further a field.
