Aakar Charitable Trust, Mumbai Overview

Mrs. Amla Ruia, known as 'Water Mother', founded Aakar Charitable Trust (ACT) in 2003 to translate her vision into grass root reality and was motivated to support villages who suffered from severe drought. She has transformed the lives of 18 lakh thirsty villagers living in abject poverty on parched land, denuded environment and degraded economy by constructing 700 check dams and water bodies. Because of her work 800 villages mainly in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bundelkhand region and some other states and are collectively earning an unprecedented net income of approximately Rs. 2,000 crores per annum. This was made possible by involving the local community at every step of decision-making. ACT’s unique model has been successful because 70% is sponsored by generous donors and 30% of the cost of construction is borne by the villagers giving them a sense of ownership and ensuring the maintenance of the structure in the future. They then convert hundreds of acres of their barren land into irrigated farmlands.
