Access Employment Limited (AEL) was established as a Social Enterprise in 1998 as a consequence of high levels of social and economic deprivation in the Larne area. AEL’s primary objective is to provide employment, work based learning and vocational training for disadvantaged young people and adults, including persons with learning and physical disability, mental health issues and the long term unemployed. AEL believes that everyone should have the opportunity to hold meaningful employment. We champion a mixed ability workforce as it is important for our service users with additional needs to see their peers in achievable valued jobs. This has raised awareness about those living with disabilities, creating disability champions amongst our employees. AEL’s operations are intentionally in an urban, town centre to create a Community Hub, a neutral space accessible to all. AEL has 52 internal employees growing exponentially from 13 and has also successfully placed 26 young people into external employment, culminating in 75 paid job roles being created.
AEL operates 7 diverse business areas and 5 employability training programmes. We work in partnership with the NHSCT, surrounding post primary and special educational schools and the NRC to deliver work experience and training through the live businesses of our social enterprise. This enables our service users to sample careers within packaging, manufacturing, online retail, horticulture, and catering. Quality, meaningful work experience enables the trainees to explore their career options, develop their work-related competences, and build on their soft skills, to make more informed decisions about their future progression. AEL generates 70% of its own income and is not reliant on grant funding, which is the sector norm.
