Accountability Unit Overview

The Accountability Unit is an independent NGO which advances conflict-related gender based rights through litigation, advocacy, research and mentoring. We engage with a range of international human rights mechanisms to obtain redress for sexual violence and gender based harm in the form of arbitrary arrests, unfair trials, torture, killings, sexual assault, human trafficking, enforced disappearance and restriction of freedoms. We work with national bar associations, universities, national and international NGOs and other bodies in countries where there is an urgent need to legally support individuals facing severe human rights violations because of their gender in conflict-related situations. Our vision is the abolition of conflict related sexual or gender based harm and violence. We strive to be forward looking, anticipatory and agenda setters for a gender-sensitive approach to justice in conflict settings. Our mission is to obtain legal redress for survivors of gender based rights violations in conflict settings; to hold to account perpetrators of conflict related sexual violence; and to advance gender mainstreaming and awareness of gender based rights.
