The African continent is endowed with a vast and unique system of oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and islands. 39 of the 55 African countries are coastal states with an extensive exclusive economic zone, which is a sea zone prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) over which a state has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production from water and wind. The combined exclusive economic zone of the continent is significant and offers an unchartered sphere for sustainable socio-economic development.
