Sri Lanka is historically an agricultural country. Its present status can be evidenced by its effective contribution to the GDP, export earnings, total employment and land use. Following the world trends of “green revolution”, Sri Lankan Agriculture sector underwent revisions to introduce high-yielding varieties, agro-chemicals and machinery for reaching production targets in late 1960s onwards. The multinational companies well picked up this opportunity to make the farmers dependent on expensive technical inputs.
The increasing cost of cultivation and environmental risks associated with high input based agriculture started suffering the agriculture and food sector of the economy since then and it has reached an extreme severity and almost the point of non-return by now. Meanwhile natural and manmade environmental issues due to lack of attention paid on waste management, disaster management, urbanization, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and mega development projects etc. are at an escalating trend for last many decades.
One of the weaknesses in Sri Lankan economy which led to aggravate this situation over the years is lack of attention paid by the policy makers and professionals in agriculture and natural environment. As a result, awareness on the unsustainability of high-input based agriculture and the impact of other environmental hazards is long-way missing in Sri Lanka.
Based on this situation, a group of agricultural and environmental professionals have come forward to form “Agriculture and Environmental Professionals Cooperative of Sri Lanka (AgEnCoop)” with the intention of:

Developing a cooperative movement that can contribute to sustainable development through training, research, consultancy and other appropriate means of interventions and exploitations in agriculture and environmental sciences at all the stakeholder levels in Sri Lanka.
