The U.S. Army’s mission is to fight and win our Nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of conflict in support of combatant commanders.
Army Officers are part of a distinguished fraternity of men and women who have led our country’s armed forces at the highest levels of the military. Presently the senior U.S. military officer is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Of the twenty Chairmen since the position was created in 1949, ten have been Army Generals including the first ever, Omar Bradley, who was also the last five-star military officer. There have only been eight five-star U.S. military officers; five Army Generals held this rank.
Of the forty-five U.S. Presidents and Commanders-in-Chief, thirty-two served in the military. Twenty-six served in the Army, Army Reserve, Army National Guard or State Militias.
