Our name derives from the Arno river, flowing through central Italy, west from the Apennines through Florence into the Ligurian Sea. Throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, Florence became, if not the birthplace, the cradle of modern banking and finance. Characters integral in forming modern finance, art, and culture would have crossed the Arno as part of their daily routine. Banking families, including the infamous Medici family, financed the invention of the piano and opera, funded the constructions of St. Peter's Basilica, and were patrons of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Galileo, and many other seminal works. For over 200 years, these families used their wealth to build dreams and leave a lasting legacy we still admire today.
