ALC commenced activities in 1985 and is the first and largest centre of its type in Australia. The Centre has pioneered extensive programs of teaching and research on the laws and legal systems of a wide range of countries and jurisdictions in the Asian region, including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Timor Leste and Vietnam. Its work and engagement activities have also included work on Islamic law, Afghanistan, Laos, Korea, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philippines.
