AUS Model Congress Overview

The American University of Sharjah Model Congress is a simulation of the United States Congress and the respective committees that operate within it. At the conference, our delegates, or rather representatives and senators, will be able to work within a system designed to be the most realistic representation of how Congress actually works. A Model Congress seeks to simulate the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the United States government. The legislative branch consists of the Senate and House of Representative committees, whereas the executive and judicial branches consist of, for example, the National Security Council and Supreme Court respectively, which will be considered to be specialized committees. Students will have the opportunity to represent elected officials based on states and party affiliations designated to them for the purpose of resolving debates in the American political system. With the diversified views that delegates must take into account, they will come to understand the art of debate and dispute settlement, along with how to reach constructive solutions. While representing the members of their chosen committees, delegates will collectively work amongst each other and create bills and amendments on the topics provided to them. A key-important feature of AUS Model Congress is that the delegates represent specific parties and, hence, get a chance to experience as well as thoroughly understand party politics. This is a unique challenge that differs from other conferences available to them. The delegates will be chaired by presiding officers throughout the weekend of the conference and will follow up with the AUS Model Congress rules of procedure in order to ensure a parliamentary mechanized steady flow of debate.
