When things go badly – as we’ve seen in our professional practice and have witnessed from personal experience – the effects can be catastrophic, both for family relationships and the long-term prospects of the business.
The bond that exists in families can either fuel or ruin a family business. 1. An introductory meeting to help us understand what ‘great’ would look like, and see if there is a good ‘fit’ between us and the potential client.
2. Designing of a plan that addresses the challenges and makes the most of the opportunities.
3. Running a series of workshops with the most effective selection of individuals and groupings.
4. Document the agreements that have been made. These might include alignment on a purpose for the business, commitments for how the family interacts, a succession plan and and a blueprint for governance.
It is often challenging work, and difficult conversations will need to be had. But the rewards are considerable: more relaxed and trusting family relationships, and healthier businesses.
