The Bermuda Diabetes Association is a registered charity that was formed to improve the lives of those with or at risk of diabetes.
We work to raise awareness of, promote education on and encourage early detection of diabetes — all with the goal of empowering people to lead vibrant lives, irrespective of their health status. In addition to diabetes education and advocacy, we offer the following programmes and services:
- One-on-one nutritional counselling for diabetes and prediabetes
- Early detection screening for complications related to diabetes
- Programmes like the Client Assistance Programme (CAP), the Know Your Medicine (KYM) Programme and the Diabetes Rewind Programme (a partnership with Argus Insurance and Island Health)
- Freestyle Libre Training
We also house the BDA Community Pharmacy in Hamilton, Bermuda. The first of its kind in Bermuda, this diabetes-specific pharmacy is open to the general public, and operates as a social enterprise, using its profit surplus to provide medication to Bermudians with diabetes. The medication is free for those who are either uninsured or underinsured and is provided affordably for those who have insurance.
Why? Because we believe that everyone in Bermuda deserves equal access to education, affordable medicine and the best diabetes care possible. It is estimated that over 14% of Bermudians have diabetes, and another 14% are at risk for developing it. Moreover, over a thousand adults in Bermuda don’t know that they have diabetes, while over 80% of Bermudians don’t know that they have prediabetes.
Our mission is to shed light on these facts and the widespread impact of diabetes and prediabetes in Bermuda.
We hope to inspire everyone to take charge of their health, by providing the knowledge, resources and encouragement needed to lead a vibrant and fulfilling life.
