Biomedical Spectroscopy Laboratory (BiomedSpect) is a research group at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), founded in 2018 as part of the Biophysics of Bone and Cartilage (BBC) group. The BBC is a global leader in cartilage and bone biophysics and engineering, contributing significantly to musculoskeletal disease research for over 20 years. BiomedSpect focuses on advancing non-invasive optical imaging technologies to improve early disease detection, particularly on liver fibrosis and osteoarthritis.
Our research integrates hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and spectroscopy to analyze the optical properties of tissues, aiming to develop new diagnostic tools. By correlating optical data with tissue composition, we aim to transform disease diagnostics, making them more accurate and accessible. In collaboration with academic and industry partners, we also utilize machine learning and data analytics to interpret complex imaging data and apply it to clinical diagnostics.
As part of the BBC, we are connected to a research community that has expanded its expertise into areas such as biomedical spectroscopy, neuromodulation of muscle activity, and the development of diagnostic technologies for obstructive sleep apnea. The BBC boasts impressive metrics, with over 1000 publications and an h-index of 76, reflecting its global impact on biophysics research.
