Black Women in Scripted (BWIS) are an impressive collective of Black British, Scripted Film and Television Executives, Writers, Script Editors/Consultants, Writer’s Assistants, Directors, DOPs and various above and below the line scripted crew. BWIS WhatsApp group was set up in December 2020 by Madeline Addy, BBC Studios Comedy Executive Producer, Cassandra Johnson-Bekoe, Writer and Script Editor signed to Curtis Brown and Thara Popoola, Writer and 2021 Channel 4 Screenwriters Alumni. Born out of a desire to create a safe and inclusive space and a positive network for black women and non-binary individuals. Through word of mouth, the group has steadily grown to over 300 members and counting. Participants in our group work for or are writing for various scripted indies and broadcasters including the BBC, BBC Films, Bad Wolf, Marvel, AMC, Audible, Netflix, Sister, Home Team, Lookout Point, Sky, Merman, Clerkenwell Films, Eleven to name but a few. We share intel on scripted job opportunities, scriptwriting competitions, online masterclasses, available diverse crew. We also share advice on anything and everything from how to write treatments, sell your idea, using Final Draft etc. Crucially, we support and encourage each other. It’s a wonderful and much needed space for a talented group of highly creative and professional Black British scripted talent. We are all scripted stars of the present and future.
