Following its inception, the club quickly advanced to a high level of competitive play in 11-man and 7-man handball, helping popularize the latter form of play. Since 1944, the team has competed in the top category of the Spanish handball league every season. The club's commitment to training and its reputation for developing world-class players and technicians has made it into one of the most recognized handball clubs in Europe. Currently, it is the only club whose men's and women's divisions compete simultaneously in the top category of the Spanish handball league.
