The Greek word doula translates to “woman who serves”. This term is now used to refer to a trained and professional Birth Attendant. The role of the doula is to provide physical, emotional and informational support to both the expectant and new family. Scientific studies have proven that having doula can greatly improve birth and postpartum outcomes.
Evidence like reduction in cesarean section rates, length of labor, and use of interventions such as epidural while in labor; after birth there are higher rates of successful breastfeeding, reduced postpartum depression and an easier transition into the new family dynamic.
