“Born D”, a project initiated by a group of like minded highschool students, firstly focuses on the impact of patriarchal names—”boy” names given to girls by parents who had a desire for boy offsprings. This project began by analyzing women’s status in China from historical, political, and cultural backgrounds. In addition, the project studied the meaning and impact of these patriarchal names on individuals, families, and society. Due to the longstanding patriarchal society of China, East Asia, and even the world, we not only asked the question of “is it right simply due to it always being like this?” but also explored the way Chinese women dealt with and resisted it.
Onto the next stage, “Born D” takes on the sustainable goal to generally explore, practice and innovate projects of women empowerment and growth. To show the marginalizing women’s stories and artwork, we expand our group from 6 to 17 and create more kinds of published work.
