Breaking the Ice is an initiative by international artists and activists that work with culture against prejudices and hate speech. The group is organizing concerts, exhibition and panel discussions, produces radio shows and documentaries. The recently launched Tawa magazine focuses on art, culture and initiatives in North Africa. Breaking the Ice has started by connecting Libyan and Tunisian artists and musicians in 2018. More than 10 events, concerts and publications created opportunities to get know each other and for exchange. Political activists and civil society organizations in Libya work in a very dangerous environment and are often limited in what they do. Artists, musicians and media activists are creating spaces for exchange, artistic action, creative esthetics and room to think. Breaking the Ice is providing such a space. In November 2019 a group of Libyan musicians and artists travelled to three German cities. The so called “Black Box Libya tour” is a cooperation of Breaking the Ice and the Heinrich Boell foundation. Now in October 2020 we are back on stage. First online, soon on tour. Cooperation partners of the project were the embassies of Switzerland in Tunisia and Libya, the German embassy for Libya.
