The Bristol Legacy Foundation (BLF) is a pioneering charitable organisation rooted in community engagement and dedicated to addressing the systemic marginalisation of African Heritage Communities (AHC) in cultural, creative, and public spaces. Founded in 2019, we aim to empower and educate African heritage communities, fostering knowledge of African reparatory justice and embracing African epistemologies as a foundation for growth and transformation.
Guided by the principles of equity, reparative justice, and collective healing, BLF collaborates with key institutional partners, including the University of Bristol, Bristol City Council, the Society of Merchant Venturers, and the Church of England – Diocese of Bristol, to align reparatory justice responses. Our Memorandum of Understanding with Bristol City Council underscores their support for our four core workstreams: Reparatory Justice, Memorialisation, Partnerships, Investments and Resources, and Storyhouse.
At the heart of our ambitions is the Storyhouse, an innovative physical space that will tell a dynamic and evolving narrative of African heritage in Bristol. The Storyhouse will be a hub of education, art, and cultural connection, celebrating African heritage contributions and inspiring communities to embrace their history and future with pride.
Through transformative initiatives like the Cascade Steps Memorial and reparatory justice education programs, BLF amplifies the voices of African heritage communities while fostering cross-cultural understanding. Our work strives to position Bristol as a global leader in cultural African reparatory justice, creating inclusive spaces, legacy and sustainable opportunities for African heritage generations to come.
