The Building In Youth initiative was launched in 2011 as a division of Construction Workers Christian Fellowship. The basic goal was to motivate interested students in Southwest Washington to consider the construction trade as a viable career option and address the urgent shortage of skilled workers among our aging workforce. Building In Youth brings together volunteer mentors skilled in the construction trades to share their knowledge and valuable experience with youth. This provides real-world construction and safety training to equip youth with marketable job skills. Building In Youth appeals to a generation of baby boomers, retiring or nearing that stage and see the tremendous need for this kind of program. The vision and mission of Building In Youth is to tangibly invest in the next generation. “Mentoring youth to build Godly character through construction training” is the core statement. The mentor training program equips adults to work alongside youth to draw out potential, build self-esteem and encourage realistic goals. Building wheelchair ramps for veterans, the disabled and the elderly provides the opportunity for youth to learn new skills, help others and learn to work as a team. Intentional mentoring establishes relationships, promotes graduation, and enables students to reach that first "rung" toward positive career choices. By providing strong leadership through trained mentors, students can have role models to encourage the development of good work habits. Working in partnership with similar-minded groups, a positive impact can be made on their community. Involvement in this program gives them hope and motivation to graduate from high school and pursue a vocation in the construction industry or higher education. BiY in partnership with Daniel’s Fund provides for those whose lives are still ‘unfolding’.” In working together, we each contribute our talents toward a common goal: building into youth whose lives are still ‘unfolding.’
