BUTTERFLY is an ambitious EU-funded project working to address the cascading ecological, societal, and economic impacts of pollinator decline. Our goal is to promote responsible pollinator stewardship and make it a common practice across sectors and regions.
Pollinators are essential to biodiversity, food security, ecosystem resilience, and the economy. Yet they are in sharp decline. BUTTERFLY brings together scientists, policymakers, businesses, farmers, and citizens to co-create innovative, real-world solutions through Living Labs — collaborative spaces where knowledge becomes action.
The project combines cutting-edge ecological research with economic modeling and policy analysis. We assess the true value of pollinators, explore the risks their decline poses to key supply chains, and develop practical tools to support pollinator-friendly decisions in agriculture, industry, and governance.
Guided by the precautionary principle, ethics of care, and the One Health approach, BUTTERFLY builds bridges between environmental science, social values, and economic systems. We aim to empower communities and institutions to better understand, anticipate, and respond to pollinator loss — ensuring healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future for all.
