C5 Yeast Company was a start-up developing yeast strains capable of fermenting 5-carbon as well as 6-carbon sugars from biomass into ethanol. The technology developed was a breakthrough for 2nd generation fuel ethanol production and was widely licensed around the globe for development and demonstration of 2nd generation ethanol production.
In 5 years’ time the company grew from 2 people in the lab to a 15 FTE company.
In 2011 the company was sold by Royal Cosun through a procedure guided by Holland Corporate Finance (today Oaklins) to DSM.
