Cardiff University 4th year Mechatronics project focusing on condition monitoring and prognostics demonstration machine. Our demonstration machine can demonstrate the initiation and sensor detection of 4 manufacturing faults. A generic manufacturing line is simulated by a continuous flow of white balls (components) containing RFID tags travelling through different processes via tracks - similar to a big marble run! Faults are initiated by a user interface created on LabVIEW, the machine then uses different sensors in order to detect the initiated faults. Vibration fault: represented by a suspended cone with a motor attached. Once the the fault is initiated, the motor causes an increase in vibration which is detected by an accelerometer. Degenerative fault: the machine incorporates two Ferris wheels which transfer components to the upper section of the track. Once the fault is initiated, one Ferris wheel gradually slows down as the other speeds up. The fault is detected by a rotary encoder which is attached the motor shaft. Temperature fault: represented by a ramp aimed at a cone. This inclination of the ramp is controlled by a servo which is attached to a thermocouple circuit. A controlled heat pad supplies heat which causes the ramp to lower. When the temperature reaches a critical point, the ramp incline will be too small to direct the balls into the cone. The fault is detected by a mounted gyroscope which measures the incline of the ramp. Quality control fault: simulated by a pinger which ejects components from the system. The pinger knows when to operate due to the infrared light sensor placed just before it. When a component passes in front of the sensor, it sends a signal instructing the pinger to initiate. This fault is detected by comparing the number of components counted before and after the pinger.
