CertiLingua is a European label of excellence that recognizes outstanding linguistic, European and intercultural competencies of students. The certificate was initiated by the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands. It is now jointly awarded by 19 partner countries and institutions. The first graduates earned the certificate in 2008, and the number of schools awarding CertiLingua has grown steadily since then, to over 200 in 2014.
