Named after the ancient Greek muse of history, Clio puts history at your fingertips. Clio is a free and interactive educational website and mobile application that guides the public to thousands of historical and cultural sites throughout the United States. Built by scholars for public benefit, each entry includes information about a historical site, museum, monument, landmark, or other site of cultural or historical significance. Using location based technology, Clio prompts the nearest entries to you, guides you to your destination, and offers turn-by-turn directions for thousands of walking and driving tours. It also acts as a virtual time machine, allowing users to see images and videos and hear and read about historic events. Clio is not only a website and smartphone app, but also a collaborative research, interpretation, curation, and map-building project. Museum professionals, scholars, and their students contribute most of Clio’s content. We also depend upon local history experts and museum volunteers who often know more about local history than anyone else. Each day, this partnership of local history experts and professional historians is building a comprehensive, dynamic, and interactive map of American history. We believe that there is something powerful that occurs when our sense of the past connects with our sense of place. We hope that you will use Clio to connect with the history and culture that surrounds you.
