Collective Media Cooperative is a platform for innovative projects that push for fairer economic relations and outcomes in media and publishing. The cooperative was founded in 2016 by a group of writers, journalists, readers and technologists to devise solutions to their own unmet needs and aspirations as workers, producers and consumers in the sector. Over the years, we have negotiated fairer rates and secured work for our members in publications such as the New York Times and London’s Financial Times, operated an on-demand newsroom for clients such as Mail & Guardian, and managed editorial projects for international organisations such as UNAIDS—the lessons from which are the foundations of our publishing project.
