Community Alternatives, Inc. (CAI) was founded in 1980 to serve the needs of
individuals in the community. In 1983, CAI expanded its services to include
both vocational and residential programs, broadening its impact on individuals
with intellectual/developmental disabilities requiring support for independent
living and employment. Over the years, CAI continued to grow and evolve,
adapting to the changing needs of the populations it serves. In 2005, the
organization expanded into North Carolina, marking a significant milestone in
its development working with pregnant and parenting mothers with substance use disorder, further diversifying its range of programs. CAI operates as a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization with its corporate headquarters located at 410 N Center Dr, Norfolk, VA 23502. The organization employs between 300 and 400 people and remains committed to providing essential services in the areas of mental health, substance use treatment, and intellectual and developmental disability support. By maintaining an agile and responsive approach, CAI continues to meet the evolving needs of the communities it serves.
