Congleton Hydro is a small-scale hydro-electric scheme developed at Havannah Weir on the River Dane by Dane Valley Community Energy (DVCE). The scheme is based on a variable speed Archimedean screw which will generate up to 65 kW, depending on river flow.
The same group of volunteers has launched a new community energy project, Congleton Solar, installing solar panels on commercial premises in Cheshire & Staffordshire.
DVCE is associated with the Congleton Sustainability Group and was set up in 2015 by local people as a Community Benefit Company to procure, install and operate a hydro-electric plant at Havannah Weir. Seed funding has financed professional feasibility studies to confirm the potential of the site and early-stage project development.
