Conservation Synergies is a non-profit organisation that combines significant practical experience with innovation by bringing evidence-based ideas from other fields to support governments & partners to better deliver conservation impact.
We focus on strengthening organisations, teams and individuals to improve conservation effectiveness. We have developed an innovative approach to reduce and build resilience to corruption and misconduct. We work on understanding and then strengthening social and organisational norms, and individual ethical behaviours. We use this approach to reduce risks, mitigate corruption and improve effectiveness in Protected Areas and conservation agencies.
We draw from many approaches but the main conceptual models we use are the Social-Ecological model, Behavioural Science and Social Order. We base our implementation support on the Infinite Game, Social Physics and incorporating Attributes.
Current projects include:
- Developing & supporting implementation of Park Resilience Plans to reduce & build resilience to corruption & misconduct in seven NPs in Mozambique, South Africa & Zambia,
- Leading a regional USAID program of work to scale up our approach to build resilience to corruption in PAs and wildlife agencies - under the new USAID OneWild regional activity,
- Developing evidence-based approaches to improve financial literacy and reduce ranger indebtedness in priority PAs in southern Africa,
- Developing an evidence based framework for strengthening ranger gender equity, leading to a transformed organisational culture that promotes social inclusion
- Supporting South Africa's DFFE to revise the national Integrated Wildlife Zone program, including piloting a new review and planning process,
- Facilitating a 4-country government CWC platform that meets biannually,
- Supporting Malawi to revise its national Counter-Wildlife-Crime strategy.
