Crowdfunding has been around for many years but really took off in early 2008 and 2009 with the introduction of Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Thanks to social media and crowdfunding websites such as these two giants, inventors and entrepreneurs had a way to come together in a collaborative way to launch new business ideas and raise small amounts of capital from the buy in of the public. The power of crowdfunding allows each small amount from each person to potentially become enough capital to launch their products successfully into the marketplace even having the potential to raise far more than what was originally set as a goal for the campaign!

Fun Fact about crowdfunding which shows that anyone can pitch an idea. There was an individual who wanted to create a new potato salad recipe. His fundraising goal was $10.00. He ended up raising more than $55,000 from 6911 backers! Although this is rare it does show the power of community collaboration in raising funds on a platform like a crowdfunding website.
Reward-Based Crowdfunding is a way for backers to receive a gift for their pledge. For example if you saw a gadget you thought was cool you could pledge on a reward and receive that reward once the project was successfully funded and started production. Inventors can have a lot of fun with their campaigns as well by offering referral contests. EZ-On BaBeez started a contest where the backer who had the most referrals received not only a product but also an ‘Abby’ mascot doll.
All in all crowdfunding is a fantastic way to raise capital for your project, to be able to participate in helping an entrepreneur launch their project or to just get that new hot thing that’s out there before everyone else does!
