Our vision is to foster intelligent regenerative medicine to cure disease.
Our mission is to enhance the use of cells as building blocks to manufacture complex biological systems (e.g. tissues and organs) for transplantation and drug development.
The problem:
• Chronic diseases are a growing global burden and belong to the top leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide
• Only symptomatic treatments exist, and the only cure for organ dysfunction and failure is transplantation
• Transplantation implies further health-related issues, and the organs supply does not match the demand: only 10% of patients in waiting lists receive the organ they need
The technological contexts:
• Regenerative medicine aims to cure diseases by leveraging the organism's intrinsic potential for regeneration and replacement
• Biofabrication is the use of cells and biological materials as building blocks to manufacture regenerative medicine products for transplantation and drug development
• These processes are partly automated with controllable bioreactors and bioprinting technologies
• Computational tools can leverage existing knowledge on the biosystems to improve biofabrication, supporting standardization, regulatory compliance and automation
Current limitations:
• Protocols for biomanufacturing develop by trial and error, starting from existing procedures
• Most regenerative medicine products are molecule- or cell-based. Biofabrication of tissues and organs is too complex due to lack of understanding of the structural and functional complexity underlying organ formation
• Biofabrication processes are small-scale, manual, empirical and problem-specific
Our solution
• cultūrā is a software framework, which aims at the generation of biofabrication protocols to improve cell- and tissue-based regenerative medicine products, handling their functional and structural complexity, while innovating their manufacturing process
