The Cultural Choice Association (CCA) is an Aboriginal not for profit association on a mission to raise awareness and support the prevention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth suicide and its related causes in Australia.
Devastatingly, the most recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirm that suicide has remained the leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children between the ages of 5 and 17. Nationally, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at least three times more likely to die by suicide, than their non-Indigenous counterparts. Suicide is a tragedy that transcends age, gender and race, however, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, it is a crisis that needs urgent attention.
At CCA, we believe one life lost to suicide is one too many and it is our own personal story of being touched by the impact of youth suicide, which has connected us to our dream and inspired our focus; to deliver preventative initiatives, address some of the key risk factors and enable long term, sustainable outcomes for Aboriginal children and communities.
