As a Great Lakes AOC, the Cuyahoga River AOC is overseen by multiple government agencies and is dedicated to delisting the river as an Area of Concern through the elimination of Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs). Beneficial Use Impairments (BUIs) are changes to the chemical, physical, or biological integrity of an area that are sufficient to cause restrictions on human use. Of the 10 determined BUIs in the Cuyahoga River, five have already been eliminated.
Through the efforts and dedication of the Cuyahoga River AOC advisory committee and the citizens of Northeast Ohio, all BUIs can be eliminated to promote a healthy ecosystem where community and wildlife can thrive.
