DECOVALEX (DEvelopment of COupled models and their VALidation against EXperiments) is an international research and model comparison initiative focused on advancing the understanding and modeling of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in geological systems. Prediction of these coupled effects is an essential part of evaluating the performance safety of deep geologic repositories for radioactive waste. Established in 1992, DECOVALEX brings together more than 100 researchers from leading institutions worldwide to address critical THMC modeling challenges, collectively providing a wide range of perspectives and solutions to these complex problems. Analysis and comparative modeling of state-of-the-art field and laboratory experiments has been at the core of the collaborative work, with an increasing focus on evaluating how THMC processes affect long-term safety predictions and their uncertainty. Current DECOVALEX participants are nuclear waste organizations, regulatory authorities, and research institutes involved in several national disposal programs across the world (Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Korea, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States). Modeling teams associated with these programs conduct collaborative research around modeling tasks of importance in the field of radioactive waste disposal. Typically proposed by one of the DECOVALEX partners, the tasks are collectively studied and modeled by the other participants such that results can be compared, results discussed, differences assessed, and uncertainties determined. Much insight can be gained through this cooperative comparison of results from different research teams using different model approaches, not only on the effects of complex THMC processes, but also on the strengths, weaknesses, and adequacies of the various approaches and predictive models used by these research teams.
