Designing Our Tomorrow (Dot) company information, Employees & Contact Information

Designing Our Tomorrow (DOT) is an initiative that brings together the expertise of the Faculty of Education and the Engineering Design Centre at the University of Cambridge. DOT started in 2009 as a research project that aimed to bring authentic engineering design practice to STEM subjects, in particular Design & Technology (D&T). The DOT philosophy is at the core of the OCR GCSE and A-Level D&T draft specifications. DOT has influenced policy in England & Wales i.e. revisions to National Curriculum 2014 and GCSE and A-Level Specifications 2017. The iterative design process of explore, create, evaluate is at the heart of all D&T GCSE and A-Level specifications having been developed by the DOT team. To this end, DOT have developed a range of resources to support teachers to equip their students with the “thinking tools” to creatively solve real-world problems with technology. Creativity is a fundamental aspect of the proposed specifications and with our ‘thinking tools’ that are housed inside our box of resources (DOT Box) creativity is allowed to flourish: “We were very creative. I never knew that was inside me… and I want it to be like that everyday” (Y10 Girl, India). The DOT approach makes learning more meaningful, empowering young people to have a say on issues that matter to them. More importantly however, the DOT Box range supports teachers in helping students meet the demands of the new GCSE specifications which start in 2017.
