Deutsches SOFIA Institut (DSI) Overview

SOFIA, das Stratosphären Observatorium für Infrarot-Astronomie, ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR) und der National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Es wird im Auftrag des DLR mit Mitteln des Bundes (BMWi), des Landes Baden-Württemberg und der Universität Stuttgart durchgeführt. Das Deutsche SOFIA Institut (DSI) der Universität Stuttgart koordiniert den wissenschaftliche Betrieb auf deutscher Seite, auf amerikanischer Seite wird er von dem NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) und der Universities Space Research Association (USRA) durchgeführt. Das gesamte Projekt wird zu 80% von der NASA und zu 20% von dem DLR finanziert; dies betrifft sowohl den Bau des Observatoriums als auch den 20-jährigen Betrieb.
