Directed Manufacturing is now Cumberland. Same original location in Pflugerville. The DM description below was written in about 2010 when the LI profile was created. The company has been maintained for historical perspective for the contribution to metal additive manufacturing. Many metal parts were pioneered in 17-4, CoCr, and nickel alloys on 3 EOS M270s. DM was one of the first companies to change the EOS parameters to improve printability and we experimented with different cover gasses. Two of the biggest customers were GE Aviation and GE Energy. It was a colorful organization to say the least. A bitter lawsuit by the 3 owners prevented DM from being sold to a major aerospace OEM and within a couple years it was sold to RTI. Those were some strange times.

DMI is also active in the ASTM F42 committee, particularly in the Materials and Process F42.05 subcommittee. We believe it is through standardization that additive manufacturing will become a common and accepted manufacturing technique.
