DIVERT is a unique, multi-award winning, Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) custody based intervention project which aims to reduce offending and re-offending amongst young adults aged 18-25.
Funded by the Violence Reduction Unit, DIVERT's highly trained Custody Intervention coaches are stationed in 12 of London's busiest police stations. Young people meeting the criteria are given the opportunity to meet with a coach post their arrest, whilst they are detained. Deemed a "teachable moment" they talk in private with the coach who is impartial and not connected with the police. The coach will seek to understand more about the young person in order to make a plan of support that will direct them into a more positive way forward post their release. Working with an extensive network of over 100 partners organisations the coaches are able to access a vast range of specialist services, training and job opportunities. Furthermore, the project works in collaboration with the Trusts and Foundations of 6 prominent Football Clubs who each provide a coach as well as access to their programmes that are embedded within the community.
Since its inception in 2015 DIVERT has engaged positively with over 8,000 young people with 1 in 3 going into education, training or employment.
The coaches will work with their candidates in the community for as long as deemed necessary and will also receive referrals via the DIVERT app, partner organisations or self referrals. In addition to this bespoke mentoring the project also runs specialist courses including Knife Crime and World of Work workshops.
