Duck Duck Pig is a new breed of farming which ironically brings forth the old way of doing things to try to regenerate the landscape as much as we work it. We believe in quality over quantity and people and place over profits and want to ensure the farm is growing in productivity in ways other than just financial productivity.
Situated on 300 acres approximately 60 km West of Melbourne we have planted a 400 Tree Truffle Orchard (or a "truffiere" if your fancy). Before we planted our truffle farm we attended out first truffle growers meeting and we joked that we seemed like the only ones without grey hair in attendance. The joke was on us however as we have realised that it takes so long to cultivate truffles our hair is now showing many streaks of "sparkles" within it.
We have also planted 17 acres of Australian native flower plants as well as some well suited other wildflowers like proteas to service the cut flower industry. The flowers all suit our climate and soil types as well as being drought tolerant.
We run a small herd of angus cross grass fed cows on the remainder of the property that is not used for truffles or flowers. We believe cows have been unfairly maligned and the problem is the industrialisation and management of cattle rather than the cows themselves. When managed correctly cows assist with regenerating the landscape, adding fertilizer to the soil and helping with crop rotation.
Lastly our aim with Duck Duck Pig has always been to share this wonderful landscape we live and work on. Our aim has been to farm people if you will. As our agritourism journey begins we are offering farm tours, workshops as well as having our curated event spaces available for rent.
