Dysons Wood Aviaries began in 2001 breeding a variety of finches including Zebra mutations, Stars (Yellow & Red), Double-Barred, and Long-Tailed. The passion grew and so did the collection! Soon Java Sparrows, Green Finches, Parrot Finches (Red & Blue Faced), Gold Finches, and many more were successfully raised and bred by Dysons Wood Aviaries. In this time we also kept Chinese Painted Quail.
In the later 2000’s Dysons Wood Aviaries acquired more Native Parrot and Parakeet species, moving away from finches. Neophemas, Red-Rumped mutations, Superbs, Princess mutations, and Kings all became part of this growing hobby. Dysons Wood Aviaries also moved into New Zealand Kakarikis, larger hookbills such as Galahs (Eastern & Western), Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos & Corellas (Little & Long-Billed), and Native Lorikeet species such as Rainbows, Scaly-Breasted, Musk, & Purple-Crowned.
As with many hobbyist bird breeders, there often comes a time when you want to embark on a new challenge. For us it was mutation breeding. We began to part with some of our birds and purchased a lot more Exotic species.
Indian Ringnecks became our first Asiatic species to own. We principally focussed on Pallids (Lacewings) as the colourations were something that interested us and appealed to our customers. Green-Cheeked Conure mutations, Sun Conures, Nanday Conures, Jenday Conures, Alexandrines and Moustache Parrots all joined the aviaries not long after our first few pairs of Indian Ringnecks came in.
In 2013 we decided that our direction should change, and Chris joined our small hobby business. Bird keeping kept evolving, and we knew to achieve goals we had to invest more into our aviaries and diversify the species we breed. The first stage was to part with some of our pairs and bring in rarer mutations and species.
Today we breed Indian Ringnecks, Green-Winged Macaws, Dusky Lories, Rainbow Lorikeets, Kakarikis, Galahs, Eclectus Parrots, Black-Capped Lories, Chattering Lories, Black Lories, Swinhoe’s Pheasants, & Golden Pheasants.
