Students taking a scientific approach to tackling global challenges. Effective Altruism is a growing social movement which uses evidence and reason to help figure out how we might be able to do more good in the world, and encourages action for the benefit of others. We want to help others, but figuring out how best to do so can seem overwhelming; with all the problems facing the world it can be difficult to know where to start, and how we can make a difference. With a world that is increasingly interconnected, and with increasingly powerful technology our actions can have consequences reaching far beyond our immediate environment, and even beyond our lifetimes. This means that there are many opportunities to help others, but what is the best thing to do with the limited time and resources that we have? The EA group at KCL aims to help students to have more impact with their careers, volunteering and donations. We ask questions such as what are the biggest problems facing the world? What problems are overlooked and neglected? Where are the opportunities to improve the world, and how can I help?
