Division of Ergonomics @ TU Berlin Overview

The Division of Ergonomics is led by Prof. Markus Feufel and his interdisciplinary team of psychologists, anthropologists, engineers, and design experts. Our vision is to empower people working in socio-technical systems to adapt to changing requirements more effectively. To accomplish this goal, our mission is to understand what people need to make good adaptive decisions and to collaboratively design work systems, trainings, and technologies that provide them with just that. In our research, we are committed to: • Problem-inspired approaches: We develop research questions out of real-world problems. • Socio-technical perspectives: We study the interplay of behavior, technologies, and social practices. • Data-theory transparency: We are committed to clear links between data, theories, and methods. Based on these research principles, we currently focus on three connected research areas: Decision Making Practices In practice and in situations involving real-life uncertainty, decisions are often distributed over time, multiple agents, and over both analog and digital artefacts. We investigate the decision practices that ensue under these circumstances, e.g., in the medical domain. Worker Empowerment Our research shows that digitalization can boost but often also hampers productivity due to a lack of integration between digital and analog technologies. Thus, we are dedicated to enhance the cost-benefit ratio of digital innovations by designing technologies that empower rather than hinder people. Theory and Method Integration We aim to apply the most appropriate methods and theories to answer our research questions. As an interdisciplinary team, we are uniquely suited to do so by exploring the potential of quantitative and qualitative methods and the combined power of theories from psychology, human factors, and the social sciences.
