Erin Schrode launched an unprecedented campaign for US Congress in California’s Second District at the age of 24. The #ErinForUs campaign sought to redefine civic engagement, reinvigorate a culture of public service, and expand the definition of who can be a politician – while adding value to society and infusing meaning into the very act of running. It harnessed the power of innovation and collaboration to deliver strong, practical solutions on today's most pressing issues, including public and environmental health, learning and the future of work, human rights domestic and abroad, and tech transformation.
An activist, an educator, a social entrepreneur — a citizen who is committed to environmental action, public health, and equal justice — Erin has been working in advocacy and education in the non-profit, policy, and corporate social responsibility spaces for over a decade, since co-founding Turning Green in 2005, but feels we can no longer afford to shun the political arena when too many are being ignored, excluded or discriminated against.
Erin ran for US Congress to deliver on the promise of a generation and a nation – with the fundamental belief that democracy should be representative. 51% of our population is women and 35% of our population is under 30, yet there has NEVER been a woman under 30 elected to US Congress.
What began 70 days before the 2016 primary election grew into a powerful grassroots movement that inspired, ignited and mobilized millions from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border, all across the country, and around the world. The #ErinForUs message resonated on the ground and spread virally through an initial video launch that accrued over 6.5 million views, in addition to features by The Today Show, Glamour Magazine, Forbes, CNN, and countless multimedia outlets, digital platforms, and social media.
