ESD Albania is an innovative, non-profit organization focused on preventing and interrupting violence, by challenging stereotypes and building healthy interpersonal relationships using personal safety and self-defense techniques for empowerment. ESD Albania was established in 2017 and has direct partnerships with ESD Global Self Defense.
Our action is focused on four ways:
1. Conduct training to have individuals qualified to teach and in addition we provide mentorship and support for them to be fully certified as ESD instructors.
2. Provide a range of online and in person resources such as webinars, trainings, videos, etc. They are translated as needed.
3. Foster development of ESD as a tool in community development, education, women’s economics and more.
4. Awareness raising and research to measure the impact of ESD in the community and society in general.
As of 2019, ESD Albania has been coordinating, organizing and delivering training of trainers for instructors in Albania, national awareness raising campaigns - including an ESD Tour to 12 districts in Albania, training youth and community leaders in over 20 municipalities in Albania. During COVID, in 2020, we delivered online trainings to women and girls as tools for prevention of gender based violence. In such experiences, we have demonstrated excellent abilities and management skills to carry out programs in settings under shifting circumstances - COVID and post-earthquake periods are examples of it. In 2021 to 2022, we have been working on integrating ESD methodology as part of the extra-curricular activities in the Schools in the 12 regions of Albania through ToT with teachers, assisting training with teachers with pupils (mentorship) and training with pupils. For the first time ever, the Empowerment through self defense in now part of the National Stratey for Youth in Albania (2022-2029), and it is incorporated in the extra-curricular programmes of Albanian public school.
