Agora Now is a network of international artists and makers with a fresh perspective on performing arts and how it can create positive change in the times we live in. We explore new ways of imagining, experimenting, producing, and collaborating. The name agora now takes its impetus from both the ancient Greek concept of agora - a space to meet - and because in modern Portuguese agora means now.
The three main building blocks are:
_ An international and growing network. We gather regularly online through a series of “Thinking Spaces”. Think of it as a global artistic think tank that leads to innovative ideas.
_ Several spaces and hubs in different cities where artists can experiment—and where local communities are actively engaged. Our first hubs started in Rotterdam (2023) and Buenos Aires (2024).
_ Artist residencies are well known in other art forms such as painting and writing. For performing artists, Agora Now is the first to offer this kind of residency across a network of spaces. Over three months, we offer artists working in performance genres time and space to test early stage ideas, they receive a living wage, production and technical support and can open up their experimenting to local communities. So far, Agora has made 35 residencies possible.
The combination of the network, the spaces and hubs, and the artist residencies leads to innovation that is much needed in our time.
Agora Now started in 2021. Our impact since that time includes:
🌍 330 artists across 50 nationalities in the global network and a wider community of individuals and activists in civic and transformation movements
🌆 Launched 2 city hubs
💸 Raised €1,093 eur million for research, pilots and projects in funding from UK and European funders
👥 Reached 7,024 people live and an incredible 1.15 million digitally
