The problem 250 years of industry and 80 years of agriculture have polluted the biosystem with pesticides and PFAS. 51% of active drinking water wells in Denmark are contaminated with pesticides, with 13% exceeding limits. PFAS is present in almost 26% of wells. Legislation requires waterworks to monitor 51 pesticides and 22 PFAS compounds. Yet, there are 4,700 PFAS compounds, and 590 pesticides have been used in Denmark. Data shows that if we test for 61 pesticides, 58.5% of wells are contaminated, and 26.4% exceed limits. The truth is, we only find what we actively search for, and pollution can take decades to reach groundwater, with humans acting as filters. The issue is so large that Danish waterworks blend water to stay below limit values. Potential health risks include liver, kidney, and pancreatic damage, as well as a higher risk of cancer and infertility.
