European Space Design Competition (EUSDC) Overview

The official coordinator of the Space Design Competitions (SDCs) in Europe. Joining a diverse and well-established international community, the SDCs have been brought to Europe. Run by the Space Science & Engineering Foundation, a UK-based education charity, the EUSDC provides space industry simulation challenges to participants aged 15-18, enriching their school learning with crucial life & career experience in preparation for university and beyond. How? By designing fully-costed human settlements within our Solar System in the short span of a 1-2 days. Through National SDCs in individual European nations, to the European-wide SDC hosted annually by the International Space University, Strasbourg, we equip participants with niche scientific knowledge building on the school curriculum, an array of interpersonal and hard skills, and inspire active participation in the STEAM industry in the future. Design challenges for each competition are written by senior NASA engineers and researchers at Imperial College and require students to design a fully-functional settlement in space, set up to 100 years in the future. They must consider very carefully the structural, operational, aesthetical and automational aspects of the design as well as pitching a design brief to judges which are comprised of leading industry professionals. Each year we welcome over hundreds of students from around the continent to compete for the ultimate prize - a trip to NASA's Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, to compete on a global stage at the World Finals, the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC).
