The Family Solutions Group is a multi-disciplinary group of professionals who work with parents and children from separated families. There are many families who experience difficulties following separation but who do not need the protection or intervention of the family court. The Family Solution Group believes these families should be supported by a multi-disciplinary ‘Family Solutions system’, away from an adversarial court system which may only add fuel to the fire of the breakdown. The Family Solution Group speaks into the needs of the separating family outside of the court context, so that their needs, and specifically the needs and rights of children whose parents live apart, may be addressed. We believe that children should be centre stage when a family separates, free from conflict and free to enjoy close and nurturing relationships with both parents, if it is safe to do so. There is also an urgent need to reframe and radically dial-down the language of separation, moving away from fault and blame. There is a culture of combat, using divisive and adversarial language, entrenching the separation conflict. Too many families are suffering as a result – and for children the long-term impact can be devastating.
